Erika Romanovitch, Food Allergy Mom

I’m a food allergy mom with a desire to share what I’ve learned while helping my family navigate multiple severe food allergies. I’ve experienced first hand how difficult it can be to go from never having to give what you eat a second thought, to having to meticulously plan out each meal every day – especially for outings. You don’t realize how much food touches every aspect of your life until it becomes a life threatening danger to someone in your family.

Food Allergy Mom, Our FAV Foods

Food Allergy Victories (FAV)

The “FAV” in Our FAV Foods stands for Food Allergy Victories. Every time I test a new recipe that works and becomes a family favorite, it feels like a huge victory. Our FAV’s aren’t just recipe related, some other food allergy victories we experience are when we find a great restaurant that is accommodating to our allergies, or if we receive good news from our allergy testing or pass an oral food challenge, or if we attend an activity that uses non-food treats or prizes, etc. Really any time we have some kind of win related to food allergies, it’s a victory.

Our Food Allergies

When our son was only 4 months old, he was diagnosed with severe food allergies to milk and egg. Since then we’ve discovered allergies to mustard, walnut, and cashew as well. At first it was extremely difficult to know what food to feed him, as it seemed that everything had milk and egg in it and mustard isn’t considered a top allergen in the U.S. so it’s not labeled for on food packaging. Over time some things have gotten easier, while others have gotten more difficult.

My husband grew up with pretty scary food allergies to salmon and tuna, but those don’t bother him anymore. However, he struggles with various food intolerances and sensitivities. This has added a whole other level of complexity to what foods we can eat as a family, and it’s inspired me to put more effort into our meals as eating pre-packaged foods and eating out has become increasingly more difficult and expensive.
